When you are called an insulting name at work you’re probably so shocked that you will find yourself at a loss for words. Your co-worker might think that they are are being witty and having a laugh, not realizing that their comment was insulting towards you.
When we think of a bully, we think of a mean girl or the kid in the playground, not a fancy attorney dressed up in a suit. Bullies are everywhere, and at all levels in the workforce.
At work you really need to pick your battles, if it was a one off comment you might want to let it go. Consider who you are dealing with, how does the person normally react if someone challenges their behaviour at work?

Here are a few things that you could say to let the person know that the name calling at the office needs to stop now.

Verbal abuse in the office
People who work in the fashion industry feel like the film The Devil Wears Prada is an accurate portrayal of the workforce. Many fashion assistants have experienced extreme bullying from their bosses, including verbal abuse and have been called and called fat and other insulting names
With social media and the #MeToo movement ex fashion employees are using social media to share their stories on @FashionAssistants Instagram account. I am sure people will think twice before abusing someone when their crappy behaviour when they may be potentially exposed to thousands of their coworkers.
Lewd comments and porn in the workplace
I had a friend who worked at a brokerage firm who was called sexy Sara by her coworkers in the office. The stock brokers would sit around and watch porn all day with the volume on. The women who worked in the office could hear the grunting noises coming from their coworker’s computers. Management knew what was going on, but they didn’t want to do anything to upset their top producers. Let’s hope things are changing for the better.
