If someone tells you that you’re not cool and you feel that you don’t fit in at school, you are not alone. Every kid feels that they don’t belong at some point in time. A lot of kids who are different in any way may stand out and not fit traditional cliques or social groups. There may be some groups out there that you didn’t even know existed, and it could be a great match for you. I often receive emails from Goths who are picked on and feel they don’t fit in with the mainstream kids.
You may not feel comfortable in a big school with a 1,000 people in your grade. How cool you are considered in school has absolutely nothing to do with your future level of success. A lot of people who have felt like outcasts have gone on to have major success. Jennifer Lawrence didn’t feel like she fit in. She wasn’t part of the in-crowd in high school, but she didn’t worry about it or let her stop her.
There is a difference between being popular where everyone knows who you are on social media and being liked. Some people think that they are really cool and a big deal, but when it comes down to it, they have very few real friends. Most people are afraid of them and are nice out of fear of being bullied. If there was a sinking ship, and one seat left on a rowboat, nobody would give them a seat because at the end of the day no one truly likes who they are. Whereas there might be a teen who isn’t considered cool and is well liked by many of the kids at school, who would offer the last seat on a rowboat.
There are kids who are popular because everyone knows who they are, but underneath it all, they aren’t well liked. If you are being harassed by a nasty bully, try a few of our great comebacks to shut up the hater.

Chad Michael Murray had to deal with a lot of haters growing up
Growing up Buffalo, New York, Chad Michael Murray felt like a total outcast and was bullied by classmates.
I had my two front teeth knocked out by a sixth grader in first grade. He picked me up and jacked me in the mouth. My house got egged, and all that stuff that happens to you when you’re growing up with people who don’t understand what’s going on.
You may not feel like you fit in right now at school, but there will be a tribe out there in the world that you will fit in and belong with. Try and find people in groups online who share your interests. A lot of the kids who are cool in high school end up being total losers as adults. Don’t let someone else’s opinion of you define you.
