What to say when...

Kind words when someone has lost a loved one

What to say to someone who lost a loved one

When someone has passed away, it can be really challenging to find the right words to say. You want to say uplifting, kind things and you certainly don’t want to talk about anything too raw that will tear their emotions to shreds and make the person start crying right in front of you.

When dealing with a death, emotions come in waves, people can be OK one minute and then overwhelmed with grief and sadness the next. People are just trying to hold it together, some folks might feel like that can’t even go on, so the last thing that they want to do is burst out crying in a public space.

A friend of mine, Pippa, lost a dear pet, a dog that she had for seven years who helped her through some really tough times. She was on the bus going to work and listened to a song that reminded her of her dog made her start sobbing. Pippa felt so embarrassed shedding tears in public on the way to work, and not being able to hold it together.

Losing a pet can be so painful because you often spend more time with your pet than you do with most people in your life. She shared that she appreciated hearing positive memories of her dog.

Sharing happy positive memories of a loved is always a great thing to do. Saying how much someone will be missed and sharing a happy memory won’t send someone over the edge.

Ten things you can say to someone who has lost a loved one

  1. We sure are going to miss Jason and all the joy and laughter he brought to all of us. If there is anything we can do to lighten your load please let us know. We will be dropping off dinner for you one night next week.
  2. I am sad to hear about Sally’s passing. If you ever feel like talking I am here to listen.
  3. Dazza touched so many lives. His legacy will live on and we all cherish the time that we got to spend with him. I am grateful to have been one of his good friends for 20 years.
  4. If you ever want to talk about your Dad please don’t hesitate to call. Your father was one of my favourite people and I am always happy to reminisce about all the fun times that we shared together.
  5. Ginger was such a truly remarkable giving person. I admire how she always lived her life with such grace and dignity. She is an example of a life well-lived.
  6. Your mom always brought joy to everyone around her. I will always remember the time she X.
  7. You must have so many wonderful memories of your time together. I am sure that will help comfort you through these difficult days.
  8. The loss of such an amazing person is really challenging. Sadie was a truly lovely, kind and wonderful person.
  9. Kelly will be missed by so many people. He always brought the fun to whoever he was with and a smile to everyone’s face. Words cannot express how sorry I am for your loss.
  10. John brought so much joy to everyone around him. He will be missed by many.

Top ten things to say to someone who is stuck in their life

Kind things to say to someone who is stuck

It can be hard to watch a friend or a loved one who is stuck in a negative situation. They may be dating a total loser, can’t find the right career path or they are abusing their health? When a person is stuck they are not living up to their true potential or creating the life they are truly worthy of living.

We all have the power to change our lives but some people can’t see that they are actually in charge of their own destiny. They blame others or think that outside circumstances dictate their reality, when in fact it is the action they take and how they think about a certain situation that creates the circumstances of their life.

People have to want to get unstuck from their situation

When you care about someone, you want to step in and make the situation better, but the truth is the only person who has the power to get unstuck is the person themselves. We can’t change something for someone body else, they have to want the change and be willing to put in the work to make it happen.

You are under no obligation to listen to endless complaining about the situation they have got themselves into. A friend of mine used to complain that she was single, I told her she needed to take action or she would remain in the same situation. Low and behold, she found the man of her dreams online and is living her happily ever after.

If you want to give someone a wakeup call, and let them know you think that they’re stuck, use one of our great sayings below.

Top ten things to say to someone who is stuck in their life

  1. Growth is painful. Change is painful. But nothing is more painful than being stuck where you don’t belong.
  2. The secret of your future is hidden in your daily routine.
  3. The path to success is to take massive, determined action.
  4. Don’t get stuck in your past, use it to fuel your future.
  5. Life doesn’t get better by chance, it gets better by change.
  6. If you always do what you always done, you will always get what you’ve always had.
  7. Only you can change your life, no one can do it for you.
  8. Great things never came from comfort zones.
  9. Your life doesn’t get better by chance, it gets better by change.
  10. If you don’t like the road your walking on, start paving another one.

What to say to a friend being treated like a doormat

Doormats are people who don’t set boundaries with others and allow people to treat them like rubbish. It can be painful to watch others treat someone close to you like a doormat. It could be your girlfriend who lets her boyfriend treat her like crap or your cousin who lets everyone borrow his homework and car.

We all need to learn the ability to stand up to other people and set clear boundaries. When you change your response to how people treat you, they will change their behavior accordingly.

At the end of the day, we teach people how to treat us and what we allow will continue. If we start saying no to certain requests from people, eventually they will stop asking.

I had one friend who was a total user she would use me to get invited to parties and meet new crew members for the airline we worked for. I let it go on for a couple of months until I realized who she really was. I decided to stop sharing which events I was attending, so she couldn’t invite herself along and I started phasing her out.

She no longer had the opportunity to use me and I didn’t even have to verbally confront her. I didn’t want to waste my energy confronting her because he was not someone I wanted to be friends with.

If you have someone in your life who is behaving like a doormat, say something from the list below to give them a wakeup call to change their behaviour.

What to say to someone acting like a doormat

  1. Being a good person does not mean you have to put up with other people’s crap.
  2. You can be a good person with a kind spirit and tell people to f*ck off when needed.
  3. It’s better to let someone walk away from you than walk all over you.
  4. Stop crying about being a doormat and pick yourself up off the floor.
  5. If someone isn’t treating you properly it’s time to stop blaming them. You decide your worth.
  6. Saying yes to happiness means saying no to people and things that stress you out.
  7. You should not have to rip yourself in to pieces to keep others whole.
  8. Unless you want to be trodden on, don’t be a doormat.
  9. You teach people how to treat you, by what you allow, and what you reinforce.
  10. What you allow is what will continue.

Ten things to say to someone who wants to quit

How to encourage someone who wants to quit

We’ve all feel like quitting at certain points of any big undertaking, whether it be a university degree, an online business or a career goal.

When a person wants to quit, they get to a point where they feel they can’t go farther because things become boring, repetitive or too challenging. If they quit, they will be starting off fresh in a new situation, and will most likely find themselves in a similar reality as the one they left behind. The best solution is to break through the challenge barrier, change their thinking about the situation and keep and keep on going.

If they have tried to accomplish their goal, and the results aren’t coming it can be very frustrating. That’s when most people feel like quitting and giving up. Sometimes we need to change our approach and reevaluate the goal. Doing the same thing and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity.

You can’t do something for someone, all you can do is offer encouragement and support. Here are a few things you can say to someone who feels like quitting.

What to say when someone wants to quit

  1. It is a slow process but quitting won’t speed it up.
  2. When you think about quitting think about why you started.
  3. If you keep going you won’t regret it. If you give up you will.
  4. Winners are not people who never fail but people who never quit.
  5. The struggle is temporary, quitting is permanent.
  6. You’ve got what it takes but it will take everything you’ve go
  7. If your going to quit anything, quit being lazy, quit making excuses and quit waiting for the right time.
  8. You haven’t failed until you quit trying.
  9. If you are not excited about it, then it’s not the right path.
  10. The greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeeed is always to try one more time.

What to say when you are asked why you unfollowed someone on social media

by 1 Comment

How to respond when someone asks why you unfollowed or blocked them on social media. Check out our comebacks at www.ishouldhavesaid.net

When you block or unfollow someone on social media you are sending a pretty strong message that you don’t value the relationship and you want the person out of your life permanently. If someone is bullying you or being verbally abusive, you have every right to unfriend the person.

You are under no obligation to have crappy people who treat you poorly in your life. If you have been on a rampage defriending and blocking people be prepared that people who you previously considered friends may ask you why. We get that you don’t want to be friends with the petty girl from high school who likes to gossip about everyone and posts 5 provocative selfies a day. Life is too short to have people clogging up your social media feed with their constant drivel.

If they ask you why you deleted them you don’t want to start a war with someone and waste tons of energy thinking about and trying to resolve the situation. Once you block someone and they have been scrubbed from your account, block the person from your mind as well and move on.

Here are a few things you can say to let the person know why you unfollowed them on social media without things getting explosive.
