Why do people call others short?

There are numerous l reasons why people call other people short:

1. Teasing: Some folks like to joke around and tease others in a playful way. There is no negative intention, they just like to banter back and forth.

2. Heightism: There is discrimination based on height called heightism, where people are judged and belittled based on their short stature.

3. Stereotypes: There are traditional false stereotypes that people associate with height. Some women perceive tall men as more attractive or dominant.

4. Insecurity: Some insecure folks insult others and call people short. The reason they do this is they may feel that they are inadequate in I some way. We all have something that others could tease us about.

Even if you have good intentions, calling another person short can be insulting and considered discriminatory. Best to be on the safe side of things and refrain from making comments on people’s appearance.

Salma Hayek was teased for being short

Photo via Wikipedia

Even Salma Hayek was self-conscious of her height when she was younger.

I felt like Ugly Betty many, many times. I’m very short so when I was growing up, people made fun of me as if it was like a birth defect, a deformity… like I was in a circus or something. I think we all have something people point out to you when you’re a kid and then you point it out to yourself nonstop. – Salma Hayek

Things worked out OK for Salma, she certainly didn’t let her lack of height stand in her way.

  3. Bully: You’re so short

Victim: well at least my heads aren’t stuck in the clouds like you.

    Bystander: OOOOOOH! ROASTED!!!

  4. My son is short, an it does not matter unless you make it. 24 year in 1st Special Forces Group the biggest bad ass I knew was 5’5″. Your mind control everything you are able to do.
Oh, and. Why are your so short? Your Mother needed a short guy in the Gangbang last night.

  5. If someone says your short say “Yeah you might be right BUT that is the only thing you can make fun of me for because I am perfect at everything ELSE!!!”

    1. No one is perfect… but I do agree that people who judge others by hight obviously don’t understand how much pain shorter people like me go through when other make fun of them.

  6. Bully:You are so short

Me: Hey, some things cone in small packages. I thought you knew that

    Bystander: OHHHHHHHHHHHH

    1. Uhm. Its bystander, and this doesn’t make sense. You’re calling someone short when you are the short one.. I’m not trying to make fun of short people, because I am one, but this comment doesn’t make sense at all… its not even a roast… no offence

  7. what i do when someone calls me short (which they stopped cuz i kinda scared them away) is i look them dead in the eye and tell them if they call me short again i would bite their ankles

  8. My favorite comebacks to being called short:
I’m not short, you’re freakishly tall.

    Yep, I am short…short-tempered.

I’m surprised you noticed that way up there, I thought we all looked like little ants to you.

  9. These are all such great comebacks. I don’t get bullied but a lot of people call me short like every day and I never know what to say. I never let it really get to me but it sort of does now. I don’t get why people feel the need to point out the obvious and judge us for something we can’t control. People who have the heart to get to know me say I have a really big personality. I’m kind of sassy but also nice and caring. They always say that they could never imagine what my personality would be like if I were tall. All of my friends are basically tall too. I’m not really complaining about being short because I kind of like it but I also have a couple problems that make it worse. I have JRA (Junior Rheumatoid Arthritis)-if you don’t know what it is look it up- I also have Scoliosis- look it up- and had eye surgery when I was little. Those sometimes affect my physical appearance which is a problem for me- keep reading- I get lots of questions about the things that are wrong with me that don’t make me feel good. But it weird. I always have to express my pain to my parents or doctors so they can find the best treatment but I am known to be tough so they don’t think much of it. It seems like whenever I express my real or deep feelings I kind of get teary and it kind of makes me want to cry.But I think the problem that affects me the most is that I actually care about what other people think of me. I know I shouldn’t and try to act like i don’t but I can’t help it. I want people to like me and you may be wondering if that’s really a a bad thing and to answer your question yes it is. I always feel the need to have to please other people mostly with my appearance and personality. It’s not really OCD where everything has to be perfect its more like I have to look good for these people and I need to make these people laugh. I just feel like everyone needs to fall in love with me and It was really hard to admit that to myself. It was also really hard to write this. Anyway theres besically my whole life story which none of you needed to know. lol. I think I need a therapist. Yeah probably anyway. For those of you who read this I’m sorry but I feel like writing it and having people know makes me feel a bit better. I can’t wait to use some of the amazing comebacks some of you guys came up with and I feel like I have been typing forever and my fingers really hurt so Imma stop now. Thanks for making it this far into my essay!

    1. Maybe stop looking at yourself as the main character of “your” story?
Accept the universe for what it is – BIG – and everyone else in comparison – small.
Everyone’s fallible; Most times people act like idiots to cover up for that particular characteristic. There’s a billion others out there that you haven’t even met. Move past the ones who look at you the same [should be easy for you, given your size =P]
      Still reading? Cheers!
The ones who see you for who you ARE, maybe they’re worth learning more about.
Everyone “needs” to be loved. But not by ones who don’t understand or know how to appreciate what’s right in front of them. Imho, you don’t need someone to “like” you, in order for your existence to matter.
I hope the years since the original posting have been sweeter to you. If not, there are many to come. Keep your head up, yea 😉

  10. This may be kinda wimpy, but it’s always been my go to.
    Person: You’re so short!
Me: I’m not short, you’re just tall.

  11. Here’s a response from the late great Ann Landers: “Everyone’s short on something. You happen to be short on tact.”

  12. If someone says hey shortie you can be like Hey how’s the weather up their cause down here it’s hot just like me

  13. Bully:”You’re short !”

Comeback:”Who cares ?! We all have our cross to bare. I’m short. You’re (fill in the blank a defect). Does it matter ?!!”

Whether you’re a girl or a guy mentioning one’s weight, even to a slim girl generally hurts. Girls are subconscious of weight even if they are thin.

No matter how big guys are subconscious of their private parts. You don’t have to only refer to a guy as short or small in that area. You can say he’s inadequate in other ways he may believe has some truth to it. For example his lack of aptitude or just his lack of any girl ever giving him the chance to use his lame private part.

Life is tough. You be tougher !!! Love you all !!!

  14. Mean person: You’re short
Victim: *CLAPS LOUDLY* way to state the obvious Einstine
    Mean person: You’re short
Victim: WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ALERT THE MEDIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SUCH NEWS!!!!!!!!

  15. I remember there was always that person who makes fun of everybody but unlike everyone else, I’m able to defend myself all I say is bully: hey why are you so short victim: I don’t know why you are so tall did you mom marry a giraffe or something. BUUUUUUUUUUURN! YOU JUST GOT ROASTED!

  16. Often it has been pointed out to me that I am short, like I haven’t noticed before! . I usually say to them – ‘Yes and usually I find that people who are short on self esteem or have feelings of being inferior tend to deflect these feelings by a compulsion to point out that I am short, I can recommend a therapist for you’
